The Ian Macintosh Theatre

The Ian Macintosh Theatre

The Ian MacIntosh Theatre is a proscenium arch theatre at BMEC and stands as one of the country’s largest regional theatres, both in terms of seating capacity and cultural impact.

It accommodates 638 people, with 387 in the stalls and 251 in the dress circle. Designed to balance scale with intimacy, the split-level seating ensures excellent sightlines and a close connection to the stage from every seat, creating an engaging experience for all audiences. The theatre is also committed to accessibility, providing facilities and services that allow everyone, regardless of ability, to fully enjoy the magic of live performance.

Fully equipped for professional productions, the theatre features a fly tower, generous wing space, and a rear crossover, allowing for seamless staging and technical flexibility. These facilities make it ideal for a wide range of performances, from large-scale touring productions to more intimate theatrical works.

The BMEC Showroom

The BMEC Showroom is a vibrant, flexible venue that can be adapted to suit a wide variety of events. With removable dividing walls, the space can be expanded or reduced in size, allowing you to tailor the layout to your specific needs and create the right atmosphere for any occasion.

In its more intimate configuration, the showroom can comfortably accommodate 60 to 300 guests in theatre-style seating or around up to 200 guests at round tables. A range of seating arrangements is available, making it easy to customise the space to suit your event style, audience size, and format.

This versatile venue has hosted everything from cabaret shows, concerts, and theatre productions to elegant balls, dance events, and live music performances. It is equally well-suited to trade shows, corporate seminars, seated meal functions, and more personal gatherings such as funerals, offering a respectful and adaptable setting for every occasion.

Featuring a sprung floor, the showroom is also ideal for dance and circus workshops, as well as performances in the round, providing both performers and audiences with a dynamic and engaging experience.

Rehearsal / Conference Rooms

BMEC has two rehearsal / conference rooms which can be opened up to create one larger space.

These spaces are ideal for meetings and small conferences, offering a comfortable and flexible environment for teams, workshops, and creative discussions. Package options are available and can include technical equipment as well as tea and coffee, helping you manage your event needs while staying within budget. With a welcoming setup and practical inclusions, they provide a convenient solution for professional gatherings of all kinds.

They are also perfectly suited for rehearsals and creative use. Whether you’re practicing lines, jamming with your band, working out vocal parts, reading through a script, or undertaking any other arts-related activity, these spaces are designed to support your process. Each room includes a piano, two tables, ten chairs, and access to general power outlets, giving you the essentials you need to get started. For rehearsals, rental is available on an hourly basis, offering flexibility to suit your schedule.

The Wattle Foyer

The Wattle Foyer

The Wattle Foyer is a light-filled, glass-surrounded space located upstairs at BMEC, offering sweeping views out to William Street and the nearby park. Bathed in natural light, the foyer also showcases a striking artwork by artist Martin Coyte, adding a unique creative atmosphere to the space.

A highly flexible venue, the Wattle Foyer can accommodate between 20–200 people and features a small expandable stage, lift access, and an on-site bar. It is ideal for a wide range of events, including:
