The Ian Macintosh Theatre
The Ian MacIntosh Theatre is a proscenium arch theatre at BMEC and stands as one of the country’s largest regional theatres, both in terms of seating capacity and cultural impact.
It accommodates 638 people, with 387 in the stalls and 251 in the dress circle. Designed to balance scale with intimacy, the split-level seating ensures excellent sightlines and a close connection to the stage from every seat, creating an engaging experience for all audiences. The theatre is also committed to accessibility, providing facilities and services that allow everyone, regardless of ability, to fully enjoy the magic of live performance.
Fully equipped for professional productions, the theatre features a fly tower, generous wing space, and a rear crossover, allowing for seamless staging and technical flexibility. These facilities make it ideal for a wide range of performances, from large-scale touring productions to more intimate theatrical works.
Over the years, the stage has welcomed renowned national and international artists, premiered countless new works, some of which were created within BMEC, and hosted influential thinkers and creative voices, making it a vibrant hub for culture and ideas. It is also a place where lasting memories are made, where children experience the magic of live performance for the first time, families come together, and audiences of all ages are inspired, entertained, and moved.
