The Strangeways Ensemble is Merrigong’s permanent company of professional actors with a disability, and Wollongong’s only professional theatre ensemble. Over two weekends in January and April 2024 ensemble members are coming to Bathurst with guest artists to run fun, original workshops in performance for young people aged 12-24 with a disability!
Performed more than 100 times in sold out halls across Australia and internationally, Where Song Began is a celebration of songbirds. The program includes music spanning 300 years, from Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and J.S. Bach to Arvo Pärt and new commissions, enhanced by a film of evocative visual projections and an immersive soundscape.
Eishan Ensemble are an Australian world/jazz band. Led by acclaimed Persian-Australian tar player and composer, Hamed Sadeghi, the ARIA nominated ensemble draws on contemporary and classical music traditions of both east and west. Eishan’s repertoire consists predominantly of Sadeghi’s original compositions with diverse improvisatory idioms featured powerfully. Variously described as Persian Chamber Jazz and Middle Eastern Jazz fusion, Eishan defies neat labels.
Larissa Burak’s exceptional soprano voice, combined with the gentle sounds of the traditional Ukrainian national instrument the bandura (similar to a lute), has thrilled audiences as geographically distant as her native Ukraine, Western Europe and around Australia. Through song and music, Larissa will bring the sprit of a nation to the people of Bathurst for the first time through the tradition folk music of Ukraine.
Composer and pianist Amanda Handel is joined by Michael Jackson on didjeridus and didjeribone for a contemporary classical program conjuring landscapes and other natural features of the Blue Mountains. Rich musical sonorities evoke the diversity of colour and texture found in the Gardens of Stone National Park. The multi-sectional structure and forward momentum of the music take the listener on a journey through this unique landscape of pagoda shaped rock forms. The music conjures the majestic views and the intricate details on the rock surfaces.
