Visitors leave. Right? On a sweltering day in January 1788, seven clan leaders gather on a sandstone escarpment overlooking the harbour. The attendees, six of them Elders and one new initiate, catch-up, laugh together, share a meal and compare notes. But beyond the friendly banter, protocols, and hospitality, a momentous decision is waiting to be made. A mysterious fleet of giant nawi is amassing in the harbour and as they creep closer, these seven representatives must choose unanimously: whether to send these strangers on their way or welcome them?

Eishan Ensemble Returns

Led by acclaimed Persian-Australian tar virtuoso and composer, Hamed Sadeghi, the ARIA nominated Eishan Ensemble draws on contemporary and classical music traditions of both East and West. Eishan’s repertoire consists predominantly of Sadeghi’s original compositions with diverse improvisatory idioms featured powerfully. Variously described as “Persian chamber jazz” and “eastern jazz fusion”, Eishan defies neat labels. BMEC is thrilled to be presenting Eishan Ensemble again this time with a full program after such a positive response from audiences during their 60-minute taster performance at Bathurst Sea of Sound in January 2024.

Muggleton’s not saying watching him do comedy will feel that good, but the comedown is much smoother, and tracksuits are still appropriate attire. Australian comedy’s foul-mouthed prophet has had a big 2023 with his first international tour, an appearance at Just For Laughs and a headline show at Sydney Opera House.

Featuring a star-studded cast including Joanna Ampil, Michael Ball, Maria Friedman, Daniel Dae Kim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Audra McDonald, Rita Moreno, Julian Ovenden, Lucy St. Louis, Aaron Tveit, Marisha Wallace and Patrick Wilson, the landmark event was accompanied by the 40-piece Rodgers & Hammerstein Concert Orchestra, conducted by Simon Lee.

MET Opera: Les Contes D’Hoffmann

This is Offenbach’s last and greatest work is a fantastical opera, starring French tenor Benjamin Bernheim in the title role of the tormented poet. Joining Bernheim is American soprano Erin Morley as Olympia, South African soprano Pretty Yende as Antonia, and French mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine as Giulietta to complete Hoffmann’s trio of lovers. Marco Armiliato conducts Bartlett Sher’s evocative production, which also features American bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as the Four Villains and Russian mezzo-soprano Vasilisa Berzhanskaya in her company debut as Nicklausse. It’s an intoxicating mix of emotion and dazzling music, including the famous, fiendishly difficult Doll Song.
