Gala Concert
The Sydney Conservatorium of Music Jazz Orchestra returns as the headline act for this year’s Big Band Blast Gala Concert. Established in the early 1970s, the orchestra has produced an impressive alumni of Australia’s leading jazz artists. Featuring a dynamic lineup of 5 saxophones, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, guitar, piano, bass, and drums, the ensemble showcases some of Sydney’s most talented young improvisers, delivering performances that blend precision, creativity, and passion.

In recent years, the Jazz Orchestra program has evolved into one of the country’s most forward-thinking ensembles, focusing on collaborations with renowned international composers such as Bob Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider, Bert Joris, Florian Ross, Jim McNeely, Darcy James Argue, Julian Arguelles, and Dick Oatts. Through these partnerships, students are exposed to cutting-edge jazz orchestral techniques and contemporary compositions, pushing their artistry to new heights. The result is a sophisticated, world class sound that continues to captivate audiences and uphold the orchestra’s reputation for excellence.

The SCJO will be joined by the Big Band Blast artists—John Morrison, Jacki Cooper, Andrew Robertson, Eric Dunan, Rod Herbert, and Hannah James.
