From the producers behind the national musical theatre tours of The Sapphires and The Sunshine Club comes Waltzing the Wilarra.
“…a highly evocative musical tale of love, jealousy, friendship and family. It is a beautiful, heartfelt production about love and loss.” Australian Stage
“Racy, toe-tapping musical numbers abound… just when you think you’ve seen the best act of the evening, the next one arrives.” ABC Perth
Charlie, Elsa, and Fay take you back to 1940s post-war Perth. Against a backdrop of curfews, and the fear of arrest for consorting, white and black manage to form their own club. For a night they can forget their worries and experience rare happy times singing, dancing, listening to music, and with a little luck… romance.
Forty years on, as the club faces demolition, our three characters meet once again to stage a musical reunion and protest in an attempt to save their old stomping ground. Dark secrets and ghosts that have lingered for more than half a century are revealed, and we discover that reconciliation is more than saying sorry.
Waltzing the Wilarra is a multi-award winning Aboriginal music theatre work, written and composed by playwright David Milroy (Windmill Baby), one of Australia’s most exciting and successful Indigenous writers.
Fresh from her starring role as Juliet, in &Juliet, Lorinda May Merrypor (proudly descended from the Kuungkari tribe in Queensland) is set to light up the stage as Elsa in this First Nations musical, directed by Brittanie Shipway. Performed by a stellar cast including Shaka Cook (Hamilton) and Lisa Maza (Stingers) and musical backing by a live band.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its arts funding and advisory body.
Production photography by Matthew Chen.
"Waltzing the Wilarra is a joyful, Indigenous musical extravaganza in which the wilarra (full moon) shines a sober light on the past and present issues of reconciliation between black and white Australia. With its whimsical feel, the upbeat musical elements and the witty dialogue, Waltzing the Wilarra manages to take a critical look at Australian society without needing a moral sledgehammer. "
