Dancenorth continues its push into innovative production design with a custom inflatable stage empowering dancers with extra rotational abilities in mid-air; kaleidoscope patchwork costumes; and over 70km of salvaged wool that has been wrangled into towering textile creations by over 150 volunteer finger-knitters. Meanwhile, more than 100 luminous “pearls” designed in collaboration with the Japanese-born artist Hiromi Tango are beacons around which the dancers orient their cyclonic rainbow.

Wayfinder’s immersive pearls and rainbows evoke both nature and novelty, offering a surprising interactive treat. They generate community among the seated strangers watching who share spontaneous exchanges.

In keeping with Dancenorth’s spirit of collaboration, Wayfinder is soundtracked by the Melbourne’s Grammy-nominated jazz-funk auteurs Hiatus Kaiyote. In collaboration with sound artist Byron J. Scullin, the band has interwoven six of its infectious, groove laden tracks with ethereal new vocalisations from lead singer Nai Palm.

Dancenorth bridges the gap between audiences and the conceptual world of contemporary dance with sensorial abundance, accenting movement with light, colour, sound and texture. Instead of retreating into the past or languishing in convention, Wayfinder rapturously bounds into a hopeful future.
