‘Tumble Down White Fella’ – Declaring War in Bathurst in 1824

Presented by Dr Stephen Gapps MPHA

Theo Barker Lecture

In his recently published book Gudyarra. The First Wiradyuri War of Resistance, award winning historian Dr Stephen Gapps MPHA tells the story of the occupation of Wiradyuri Country and the resistance warfare between 1822 and 1824 around the Bathurst region.

For the 9th Theo Barker Memorial Lecture, Stephen will explore how effective this resistance warfare really was, how the British regarded it as a war at the time, and how we have failed to truly comprehend and commemorate the Bathurst War.

The lecture will be followed by refreshments and an opportunity to meet Dr Gapps. A book sales table will be provided by Books Plus, with Dr Gapps available to sign your copy of Gudyarra. The First Wiradyuri War of Resistance.

The Theo Barker Memorial Lecture is presented by the Bathurst District Historical Society and Bathurst Regional Council. The lecture will be the opening event in Bathurst’s 2022 Autumn Colours program.
