Conceived and composed by Gerard Brophy, Gethsemane refers to the place where Christ faces the realisation of his imminent death. Using the traditional Jeremiah lamentations, as well as contemporary accounts of life on the streets of Calcutta today, this major new work interweaves music, spoken word, and ritualised movement. In the wake of the memorable Tenebrae and Visitatio productions, Gethsemane represents a new and timeless meditation on poverty, abandonment and compassion.
"A minha alma esta profondamente triste, até a morte; ficai aqui e vigiai." "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch." (Mark 14:34)

"What lies at the heart of our work is a profoundly musical experience. Our instrument is our body and, inevitably, that makes this experience also a theatrical one. As in the Tenebrae or Kalkadunga Man productions, we embrace the entire canvass of human expression. With our voice, with our body, and with our mind we want to continue to surprise ourselves - and move you." - Roland Peelman, Artistic Director, The Song Company
